Patterns of Shiraz with Farkhondeh Ahmadzadeh

Patterns of Shiraz with Farkhondeh Ahmadzadeh, artist, illuminator, calligrapher.
Drawing inspiration from the stunning patterns in Shiraz’s Islamic architecture, such as Vakil Mosque (18th century) and Nasir-al-Mulk Mosque (19th century), the students on this course looked at how to create compositions from 4 and 8 folded geometry shapes.
Students learnt how to develop these using a compass and a straight edge, tessellating them and creating their own compositions, first through drawing with coloured pencils and pens, and later with natural pigments. Persian poetry and music was played throughout the course and the students looked at photographic examples of Shiraz’s Islamic architecture as well as depictions in Persian manuscripts.
